13 July 08 ~ 10.30hrs ~ Phone
call from Esther McCall
The group have just come down from the Plateau having had
a wonderful 3 days at Wilderness Camp.
Whilst the students felt they didn’t get to see the
variety of animals that they would have liked, they still
managed to see Giraffe, Sable, Eland, Mongoose, Genet, Dung
Beetles and a number of species of birds such as Hornbill,
Lilac Breasted Roller (absolutely beautiful) and
Sandgrouse.
The Wilderness Camp itself was well equipped and relatively
sheltered, so everyone has felt less cold than was the case
on their first night. Everybody soon got to grips with using
the one shower and toilet both of which were open to the stars.
Students soon adopted the following rhyme.
“If it’s yellow, let it mellow... If it’s
brown, flush it down!”
Subsequently, however, this verse was added to. Following
an evening where they had put dinner on before disappearing
off to visit a viewing hide, they found themselves delayed
returning to camp. Their pasta was somewhat overcooked (described
as resembling spaghetti soup) so their rhyme then became:
“If it’s yellow, let it mellow… If it’s
brown, flush it down… If it’s white, it’s
pasta night!”
Days have typically started at 5 am and it has been considered
a late night if they have managed to stay awake much beyond
9 pm. The camp itself was near some really impressive rock
structures and apparently some students, having climbed to
the top, have managed to take some spectacular photographs
of both sunrise and sunset.
The missing rucksack has now turned up having been driven
to Waterburg. That said everyone was a bit bemused when the
driver offered them no less than 3 bags to choose from (so
it looks like some poor souls somewhere are still without
their luggage)... but we're alright Jack!
They are now headed for a campsite on the outskirts of Etosha
National Park ready for the next stage of their adventure.

Charlotte called to see how things were here, a quick update
from this end and she said "We win, we have seen giraffes".
She quickly spoke to Eliza and said she has seen baboons and
giraffes.
She said she was having an amazing time and sounded really
happy.

Daniel telephoned this evening with the latest news. They
were safely at Etosha National Park and had been up close
with elephants. As already reported the nights are freezing
and the days are hot although the night temperatures are
improving.
They are going to a restaurant tonight and everybody seems
happy and enjoying the experience.
The call was cut short as there was a rumour of a rhino!!

Tom telephoned on Monday night. They had
a brilliant time on the Waterberg Plateau. He was amazed
by the fantastic sunset and sunrise. En route to Etosha
they got really close to a herd of elephants which he was
really excited about. He mentioned the first cold night
but I don’t think it’s a problem now. He was
looking forward to the restaurant meal as I’m sorry
to say that his group were responsible for the ‘pasta
night’! Natasha then spent the rest of the phone call
asking if he was going to do a bungee jump! They sound like
they are having a great time!
